- Name the audience and the question this diagram answers.
- Identify the technical owner who can approve the relationships.
- Label every node with a consistent noun and every meaningful flow with a verb.
- Define arrows, dashed lines and boundaries in a legend.
- Check that colour is not the only way to tell states or paths apart.
- Trace the primary path, exceptions and return paths.
- Check labels at the intended display size.
- Provide a text explanation alongside the diagram.
- Confirm claims with the technical owner before publication.
- Record the source, owner, version and last review date.
